Looking for the perfect energy bar?
Nutrition is often a vital yet overlooked component of any adventure you’d like to complete. But the simple act of sticking a Tahoe Trail Bar in your pocket is a great and easy way to fuel your journey. While doing most activities, our bodies preferred fuel source is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are an especially important source of energy for active people. Carbohydrates are stored in our muscles and liver. In addition to eating adequate carbohydrates prior to activity, activities lasting longer than one hour of high intensity, eating 30-60 grams of carbohydrates every hour can help sustain energy and increase recovery. Overall, this contributes to better performance.
Tahoe Trail Bars are a great carbohydrate to consume while doing prolonged activity. Each bar has about 30 grams of carbohydrates. The first ingredient in these bars, is brown rice syrup. Brown rice syrup is essentially all glucose or carbohydrates and when used appropriately during endurance physical activity. This is a positive attribute as it can be rapidly utilized by the body. The consumption of these carbohydrates help prevent the body from using muscle protein as energy. This makes these bars the perfect energy bar.
Equally as important as fueling during your adventure is recovery. Again, Tahoe Trail Bars are a great option for this as not only are they a great source of carbohydrates, they also include protein. My favorite flavor, “Caramel Chocolate Chunk,” provides 10 grams of protein which is important to replenish and repair muscle tissue. Because Tahoe Trail Bars are plant based, the protein source is a soy protein isolate. Soy protein isolate is a dry protein powder that has been isolated from other components of the soybean. This makes it easy to incorporate into other food products. One standout feature of using soy protein isolates is that because it is not from an animal product, it is almost fat free and contains no cholesterol and little to no saturated fat.
With all these wonderful qualities, it’s no wonder that everyone wants to stick this delicious energy bar in their pocket and head out the door. It’s important to remember that these bars are designed with a specific job, to fuel journeys. Although this energy bar can be pulled out of a desk drawer to enjoy as a mid-day snack, the nutritional design of these bars is for more high energy demanding activity.
It is important to be diligent in your nutrition just like you are in your sport, adventure or physically demanding job. It can mean the difference between success and failure. Tahoe Trail Bars are plant based, gluten free energy bars that are a great way to fuel/refuel. They are also portable and they taste amazing. See you on the trail!!
I got my undergraduate degree in Nutrition at the University of Nevada, Reno and my master's degree from Baylor. I was a dietitian for the Air Force but separated at the rank of Captain and moved back to Reno to be closer to family. Currently, I work full-time as a Registered Dietitian, I am a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD), and have my own business, Battle Born Nutrition. Between work, being a mom to my 2.5-year-old son and my own adventures, I’m pretty busy.
As a Registered Dietitian and a mom, what I put in my mouth or my son’s mouth is important. Food is fuel and I want our bodies to be running on premium. Additionally, more and more evidenced-based literature is showing the great benefits of a plant-based diet.
