Diet and Cancer Prevention
Cancer prevention may not be 100% possible, but there is evidence to show that you can in fact reduce your risk of certain cancers by eating the right foods. Eating whole-foods, fibrous foods, and limiting your red meat intake can go a long way in improving your health. Additionally, if a particular cancer runs in your family, there is a good chance that you have a gene which increases your risk. Why not potentially increase your life expectancy by treating your body with foods that are good for it?

“Nutritional factors have been estimated to contribute to 20–60% of cancers worldwide and to approximately one-third of deaths from cancer in Western countries” (Marjorie L McCullough). The evidence supports that fiber and whole grains can help prevent colorectal cancer and weight gain. Furthermore, foods that are high in anthocyanins, commonly found in berries, are also proven to fight off colorectal cancer. Additionally, breast cancer risk and tumors can be reduced with food items such as walnuts, olive oil, and flaxseeds. It should be noted that these are items that are easily incorporated into a daily diet. For instance, walnuts are a great snack, olive oil can be replaced with other cooking oils, and flaxseeds don’t have a strong taste so they can be cooked or baked into just about anything.
Finally, weight alone plays a large factor in acquiring various types of cancers such as breast, colon, rectal, endometrium, esophageal, kidney, and pancreatic cancer…just to name a few. Also, research shows that being overweight early on in one’s life may play a factor as well. The American Cancer Society states, “being overweight during childhood and young adulthood might be more of a risk factor than gaining weight later in life for some cancers.”
