The Best Benefits of Plant Based Protein

Plant Based Protein

Plant Based Protein is a trendy topic right now. From plant based protein bars like our own to plant protein powders, you’ve likely seen these products around the store and online. Maybe you have already integrated sources of plant based protein into your life or are curious as to what all the fuss is about. It is tough to come across plant based bars! Tahoe Trail Bars are sourced entirely from plant based, clean ingredients. Our bars are also vegan, gluten free, and we are in the final stages of our Non-GMO certification. But why, you ask, is plant protein such a big deal? For years, experts have touted the health benefits of a plant based lifestyle. Read on for some of their arguments in favor of plant based proteins.

Environmental Impact

The production of plant protein utilizes fewer resources than the production of animal protein. The production of animal protein uses about one-third of the world’s fresh water and costs massive amounts of energy and fuel to produce. Plant protein is much more sustainable and is better for the environment. Tahoe Trail Bar values a love for the great outdoors and we fulfill our mission through the use of plant based nutrition and our membership in the 1% For The Planet initiative.

Clean Protein

Did you know plant protein is inherently low in saturated fats? Animal Protein is loaded with saturated fats which raise cholesterol and contribute to clogged arteries. Saturated fats are most commonly found in meat, dairy, and egg products. Clean plant protein is free of the saturated fats, growth hormones and antibiotics! Your health journey is important to us and we want to keep your fuel clean and your journey free of complications. Clean isn't just a buzz word, so do your due diligence and find only the best foods to put in your body. Most of all, find ways to add clean proteins that taste great!

Digestion

Plant protein is easier to digest. The body spends less time on digestion due to this, and has more energy available to use throughout your journey. Plant protein is loaded with fiber that aids in this gradual digestion. As an added benefit, plant protein reduces inflammation. This, besides all of the disease fighting phytonutrients found in plant protein!

Other Sources of Plant Protein

Our bars are great sources of clean fuel for your next hike, ski trip, mountain bike ride, or any other outdoor adventure. What kinds of plant protein can you add to your meals? Let's find out.

Here are some of our favorites.

Nuts

Nuts are great for on-the-go fuel or mixed into your morning oatmeal! They are a dense source of protein and are loaded with omega 3’s, vitamins, and minerals (such as manganese, phosphorus and copper). One 1-ounce serving of almonds is only 155 calories and packs 6.4 grams of protein. If that isn't a great snack, I don't know what is!

Beans

Add beans to salads or add them to virtually any meal! Beans are a great source of plant protein. The high fiber found in beans also promotes gut health and they have many links to reduced heart disease, diabetes, and excess body weight. You really can't go wrong by adding beans to your next meal. Additionally, with so many varieties, you're sure to find one that meets your personal taste.

Nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast is one of our owner Wes’s vegan favorites. Nutrient dense and with a cheesy flavor, nutritional yeast can be used on your favorite pastas or sprinkled on top of popcorn (really). This powerhouse is a complete source of plant protein with 14 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber per ounce, not to mention being great source of B vitamins. Don't knock it 'til you try it!

We know that life can be hectic and we want your adventures to be the best they can be. With that in mind, consider a plant based snack rather than animal proteins on your next outing. Plant proteins won't weigh you down but will provide enough satiety to keep you going longer. Integrating clean plant based protein to fuel your journey is one simple way to feel a little better, be little happier, and maybe even climb a little bit higher.

So carry a Tahoe Trail Bar in your pack and rest easy. Our gluten free, vegan energy bars taste incredible and will fill up your stomach for the longest treks. Keep going, trail fans!
